EE CEO speaks out on BT and Virgin Media

News of the BT– EE merger has thrown up lots of questions in the industry but EE CEO Olaf Swantee has been quick to try and clarify their position on Virgin.

BT & EE merger

When questioned on whether EE would continue to provide wholesale services to Virgin once they come under BT’s ownership he was unequivocal in his response and stressed BT’s commitment to the wholesale market.

Clearly the size of the Virgin Media account make it attractive to BT-EE but it will be interesting to see what happens. Will rivals Virgin Media, who currently have 3 million mobile subscribers, want to continue to use its services? According to CEO Olaf Swantee Virgin mobile’s customers are very happy with the existing service they receive on the network despite the fact that they are currently only benefiting from 3G.

BT-EE might have demonstrated their commitment to Virgin Media and the wholesale market but perhaps the bigger question is how will Virgin feel about using one of its biggest rivals as its provider? They may stay to avoid disruption to their customers but it’s hard to imagine that they will be happy with the arrangement. Will they look to O2, Three or Vodafone instead?
